Kappa Alpha Theta began partnering with National Court Appointed Special Advocates/Guardian ad Litem (CASA/GAL) in 1989.

CASA consists of a group of trained community volunteers, who have been appointed by a judge, to speak up for abused and neglected children in court.

With the information provided by CASA volunteers, judges are able to make informed and timely decisions as to what is best for the child so these children still have a chance at the best childhood possible.

Every year, CASA volunteers help approximately 280,000 abused or neglected children find safe and permanent homes.

Columbia Theta, specifically, holds two annual events in support of CASA: Cupcakes for CASA and CASA Carnival.

Every active member participates in the event in some fashion,—whether it be through planning, setup, or activity supervision. Traditionally, the chapter holds one event during the spring semester, and one event during the fall. This past spring, our chapter raised over $5,000 in support of CASA-NYC and the Theta Foundation.

Kappa Alpha Theta partners with CASA by raising money for programs, providing office support, organizing fundraisers for toys or items for children, and becoming volunteers themselves.

This year, we hosted a Picnic for CASA: a joint philanthropy with the brothers of Columbia Sigma Nu. Together, we we raised over $2,000 for CASA.

In 1990, the U.S. Congress encouraged the expansion of CASA by passaging the Victims of Child Abuse Act. Today more than 900 CASA programs are in operation, with 62,000 women and men serving as volunteers. Since selecting CASA as our philanthropy, Kappa Alpha Theta continues to provide funds for a variety of projects, including start-up grants and public awareness videos.
